Basic Horsemanship Riding Lessons

The Basic Horsemanship Riding Program is designed for riders who are new to horseback riding or who want to build a strong, confident foundation in English riding before specializing in a discipline.

This program focuses on the fundamentals of safe, effective riding and horse care, helping students develop correct position, balance, and communication with the horse. Riders learn how to properly groom, tack, mount, and ride with confidence while developing an understanding of how horses think, move, and respond to cues.

Instruction emphasizes:

  • Safe handling and barn awareness

  • Correct English riding position and balance

  • Basic walk, trot, and introductory canter work (as appropriate)

  • Steering, stopping, transitions, and basic control

  • Developing confidence, responsibility, and respect for the horse

As riders gain skill and consistency, they may transition into one of SSRA’s specialized English disciplines. Students interested in Hunter/Jumper or Dressage will move into discipline-specific instruction with the appropriate instructor, allowing them to build upon the strong horsemanship foundation developed in this program.

The Basic Horsemanship Riding Program provides the essential skills every rider needs—whether their goals are recreational riding or progressing into a competitive English discipline.
